Horsepen Park/WBNA Trail

Located on Race Track Rd in Bowie between 8603 Racetrack and Kimberwick Drive
Horsepen park is one of our regular go-to spots close to home. There is a new playground here that opening in 2019 – one side is for older kids and has more modern and advanced climbing structures. The toddler side has cute train equipment and is the perfect size for young kids, and there are swings for all ages. There his a really nice pavilion with several picnic tables and a few tables to play checkers as well! There is also a HUGE zip-line (see video).
Besides the awesome zip-line, what really makes it unique is the recently completed bike tracks. There is a concrete pump track, a dirt track, and a ramp track with 3 routes for varying skill levels. My girls just recently started getting the hang of their balance bikes and they LOVE the ramp track, and we saw adults riding on it while we were there as well so it really is great for all age levels.
In addition to the great playground and bike track, we love this park for its access to the WBNA trail. The spur trail portion (where we usually walk) is a nicely paved, flat, scenic trail. The paved portion of the spur trail is a 1.5 mile out and back from the trail head and is perfect for stroller walks, bike rides or to let your toddlers walk on their own. There are boardwalks and bridges and really pretty water views. We’ve frequently seen herons here and lots of evidence of beavers along the trail. Keep in mine there are a decent amount of bikers on this trail (especially on weekends) so keep your little ones close so they can get out of the way if necessary!
This playground used to always be empty, but it has definitely grown in popularity in recent months. We have never had an issue there during the week but we were there this past Sunday and it was extremely busy. We didn’t have an issue keeping our distance though, since there is plenty to do between the bike track and playground. Plus, you can always go walk on the trail if it gets too crowded.
